They intended to follow Pyromania quickly but were derailed when their drummer lost an arm in a car accident the first of many problems that plagued the group’s career. Def Leppard managed to pull through such tragedies and they even expanded their large audience with 1987’s blockbuster Hysteria. As the ’90s began mainstream hard rock shifted away from Leppard’s signature pop-metal and toward edgier louder bands yet the group maintained a sizable audience into the late ’90s and were one of only a handful of ’80s metal groups to survive the decade more or less intact. Def Leppard had their origins in a Sheffield-based group Rick Savage (bass) and Pete Willis (guitar) formed in their late teens in 1977. A few months later vocalist Joe Elliott a fanatic follower of Mott the Hoople and T. Rex joined the band bringing the name Deaf Leopard. After a spelling change the trio augmented by a now-forgotten drummer began playing local Sheffield pubs and within a year they had added guitarist Steve Clark as well as a new drummer.

That’s part of it but the Deep Ellum I was looking to be landmarked is the Deep Ellum of Leadbelly T-Bone Walker and Alex Moore of the Ella B. Moore Theater (where African-Americans went) and Ma’s Place where Babyface Nelson and Bonnie and Clyde hung out. It was once a funky neighborhood where blues met country music and Tin Pan Alley and helped create Texas blues where blacks and Jews owned businesses lived and mingled certainly a rarity in Dallas. I’m also willing to bet that Starr’s own proposal and probably all the others never really addressed something else that made Deep Ellum unique in Dallas’ cultural history. Tattoo parlors and nightclubs and slumming suburbanites were hardly exclusive there; you could find them on lower Greenville or in South Dallas or along Fort Worth Avenue.

That’s when I really started to connect with the music I was listening to. I dropped pop altogether and listened strictly to punk rock metal psychobilly and anything else of that general sound. I’ll be honest my mom doesn’t always approve of the music I listen to. She’s not too big a fan of metal music. But she understands that music is my escape and that my headphones are like a sanctuary to me. Music is a great way to just get away from all the stress and problems that we’re facing and just unwind and relax. I never cared about what others think and I don’t hide the music I love.

The New England Metal and Hardcore Festival is one of the countless of Metal and Hardcore music festivals. It is only out-attended by the infamous Milwaukee Metalfest. In my opinion New England is better because it has Metal music and Hardcore music. The festival takes place at the Palladium in Worcester Massachusetts and consists of two stages and lasts two days long. The first day started at 3 p. and ended at about 1:30 am.

The clear skies and blazing sun were a welcome respite from Friday’s torrents of rain but large expanses of thick gooey mud and large pools of collected rainwater still made traipsing the festival grounds a singularly unpleasant experience. By the end of the day one of the larger patches of mud was spotted with several pairs of abandoned flip-flops helpless victims of the greedy muck. In theory Saturday’s roster made a strange kind of sense: Tool are no one’s idea of a conventional metal band so placing them at the end of a day filled with artists known for their sonic restlessness should have allowed for a welcome dismantling of musical borders. But instead of a warm musical reciprocity what occurred mostly was separation. Liberty State Park was suspiciously underpopulated for most of the day most of the acts being greeted with either indifference or hostility — like for example that My Bloody Valentine single-finger salute. Which to be fair did not arrive without provocation. Part of the magic of a My Bloody Valentine show is the way the band members — all the while passive and distant — seem to take an impish thrill in pushing their audience to the physical breaking point.

Never a good sign considering most up-and-coming bands need to strike while the iron is hot. It’s not my intention to be derisive of the longer more ornate and transition-heavy compositions the group played to a surprisingly not-packed house (given the small room size and free pricetag) but the majority of the crowd moshing came during the performances of Hello Master’s better cuts. In the metal music world expanding one’s sound typically means some Ronnie James Dio-esque lyrical mythology coupled with Yngwie Malmsteen technical wizardry but most attempts at reaching metal Valhalla on a mighty steed tends to include all the cliches Spinal Tap alluded to two decades ago. Sure we all have a chuckle and air guitar to Dragonforce but Priestess are a great band and great songwriters and deserve better than to be lumped in with tongue-in-cheek metal traditionalists. It’s disturbing then that Priestess’ predilection is to turn it up to 11 and that the band played a new song entitled "Firebird. "Don’t fear the writer though ? the working man’s metal band haven’t descended into guitar-tapping Protest The Hero levels of self-parody. Their more complex dense arrangements might actually be really terrific although Foufounes Electriques is one of the worst sounding venues in the city and the guitar interplay came across as a wash of white noise instead.
