performs at xxfest 2009 at the xford County Fairgrounds in xford on Sunday. XFRD ? More than 3300 metal fans from across the region descended on xford County Fairgrounds for a daylong music festival jam packed with roaring riffs pounding drums lyrical angst and of course lots and lots of moshing. "Heavy metal music rocks" screamed Josh Thurlow 26 of Norway as he took a break from slamming bodies inside the pit during the New Hampshire-based Honest Eye set. "I most definitely give this event two thumbs up! That’s what we all came here for ? heavy music and moshing. "The throng of people gathered on a fairground field grew steadily throughout Sunday’s event in anticipation of headliners Papa Roach and their opening act local Maine-based favorite Dead Season. rganized by New England Concerts the event aimed to not only bring a bigger act to town but also offer big-time exposure to several smaller bands. The all-day music event featured 25 acts from across Maine and theregion on dual stages that ping-ponged bands andfans alike back and forth.

Feelgood’You have to question the wisdom of Mötley Crüe?s decision to perform as it did Friday at the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino on a stage set to resemble a morgue. The idea that this band is dead after all is not one that needs any help: Though it has stayed relatively active (in various permutations) since first emerging as a product of the early-?80s hair-metal scene Mötley Crüe hasn?t released a worthwhile album in 20 years. Its latest last year?s ?Saints of Los Angeles? summoned some renewed energy but lacked any memorable tunes. Additionally the group features a guitarist Mick Mars whose signature look is more or less that of a corpse as well as a bassist Nikki Sixx who wrote in his book ?The Heroin Diaries? about the time he was thought to have expired as a result of a drug overdose. Still despite the ample evidence of their has-been status these unlikely Sunset Strip survivors managed Friday to blow away the cobwebs and flash back to their glory days. Somehow they turned a morgue into a place of life.

The clear skies and blazing sun were a welcome respite from Friday’s torrents of rain but large expanses of thick gooey mud and large pools of collected rainwater still made traipsing the festival grounds a singularly unpleasant experience. By the end of the day one of the larger patches of mud was spotted with several pairs of abandoned flip-flops helpless victims of the greedy muck. In theory Saturday’s roster made a strange kind of sense: Tool are no one’s idea of a conventional metal band so placing them at the end of a day filled with artists known for their sonic restlessness should have allowed for a welcome dismantling of musical borders. But instead of a warm musical reciprocity what occurred mostly was separation. Liberty State Park was suspiciously underpopulated for most of the day most of the acts being greeted with either indifference or hostility — like for example that My Bloody Valentine single-finger salute. Which to be fair did not arrive without provocation. Part of the magic of a My Bloody Valentine show is the way the band members — all the while passive and distant — seem to take an impish thrill in pushing their audience to the physical breaking point.
