I continue to be surprised at just how well heavy metal and game design seem to go hand-in-hand. But maybe that’s because both at their best are willing to throw the rules out the window to try and create something different and powerful. Schafer says that he was drawn to this idea because he ’s always like the power of heavy metal music and its ability to tell epic stories. In particular he likes the power of the album covers something he’s now working to turn into a living game. Those covers he told us don’t worry about what should make sense just “is it awesome looking and is it cool. ”“Can I put a gas mask on a druid” he asked.

All three sang but McKean did most of the lead vocals. Heard acoustically songs like Hell Hole Bitch School and Big Bottom took on a different life than if the guys had rolled out the arena rock clichesdone so well by Spinal Tap. Minus the metal you could imagine acts like Hamell on Trial orTenacious D playing these tunes. That’s the thing about the Tap: Musically inclined actors Guest McKean and Shearerstayed in character so well even to the point of releasing albums and playing actual gigs thatsome people thought they were for real. This writer recalls once having to explain this to a clerkat the now-defunct Virgin Megastore at Easton. ther people who didn’t get Spinal Tap were television executives at MTV (McKeanpointed out that the “M” doesn’t stand for music anymore – it means “Mmm let’s change the channel”)and NBC. At the latter network a censor by the name of Bill Clotworthy approved showing This Is Spinal Tap albeit with heavy editing.

peth did not disappoint. pening the show with “Heir Apparent” off their 2008 album Watershed peth got the crowd’s attention and kept them firmly planted in the palm of their hand. peth’s musical style is quite different from most heavy-metal bands. The vocals of Mikael Akerfeldt bring a melodic feel to most of the tracks. The bands influences from folk music and progressive-rock are quite apparent. Many of their songs span various styles with acoustic guitar and piano solos all while being accented with classic metal tendancies. Their songs are very methodical and thought out productions with track times frequently exceeding 10minutes.
