This list was more of an undertaking than expected. Every damn black metal band out there sounds like it was taken from Middle Earth and it seems like there is a band for every character in the writings of JRR Tolkien. But we searched from the deep seas of Ekkaia to the highest mountains of Mordor and have this weeks top 10 list. Remember this is just bands derived from characters not locations. That will be another geeked out list. AgarwaenNargothrond T? hid is name and identity and called himself Agarwaen son of ?arth.

This month the Brooklyn-based hipster handbook Vice magazine parades through Atlanta with an onslaught of publicity to coincide with the release of the new Black Lips album 200 Million Thousand on Feb. In addition to releasing The Vice Guide to Atlanta (in the tradition of popular releases like The Vice Guide to Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll) it will also co-sponsor the epic Scion Rock Fest at the Masquerade Music Park on Feb. The lineup brings 30 of the country's premier metal bands including Boris Neurosis Atlanta's own Mastodon and more together for a free concert. The idea behind the three-pronged marketing blitz is to cast a wide net over Atlanta's masses – and alert them to what's going on right in front of their eyes.

His early work in radio helped broaden his tastes. Stone began pulling air shifts in his home town before he could drive and one specialty show in particular at KFMX a station in Lubbock where he worked after college had a sizable influence on him. “This kid was the music director and he had a six-hour metal show Saturday nights from midnight to six in the morning” he recalls. I heard shit that I had never heard before. That’s when I got hip to a lot of Death and from then on I became just this flag-waving fan of metal. And soon Stone was rocking the Rockies at a station that had been waving that same flag for years.
