Did Metallica’s notoriety or music get them inducted into the Rock …

Like most fans I too was happy the band would get the recognition they deserve. But then I started to reflect on the bands tumultuous career. Is Metallica at the same level that Jimi Hendrix Bob Dylan Neil Young The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin are at? Maybe to some metal fans they are. In my mind there are so many more deserving metal bands that should get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before Metallica.

“But surely there cannot be this many genres of metal?”h I was once as innocent and na’ve as you. But as it turns out after listening to countless lectures on metal music from my good friend Paul metal is as diverse a species as homo sapiens. There’s heavy metal death metal black metal grindcore rapcore nu metal the ever popular groove metal folk metal and my personal favorite – Viking metal a veritable Wonka factory of metal. Now of course you raise the very important question “Am I supposed to care about all of this garbage?” Yes actually you are – and here’s my first point: there are so many genres of metal that a new metal band can potentially come into existence and claim it is its own genre simply by saying it has fused the styles of two different bands who have done the same thing before them. There aren’t this many genres of metal because the music is different enough for such variations to exist; this “genre”-fication exists because otherwise new metal bands get pegged as being followers. And we all know you cannot be a follower and still be metal (exclamation point).

The song is the first single off UNSUN’s debut album “The End f Life” which was released on September 22 2008 via Century Media Records. riginally formed under the moniker UNSEEN the dynamic four-piece decided that something incorporating day and night light and darkness would suit them best. Thus UNSUN was born a label perfectly encompassing the melancholic dark and yet catchy nature of their music as well as the stark contrast between female singer Aya’s highly melodic vocals and the driving powerful riffs. Consolidated by the sheer passion to play intense music Mauser and Aya knew upon their first rehearsals that it was their destiny to create music together. From the very beginning UNSUN was not supposed to be just another side-project for Mauser but his personal way of exploring new music. Thus he and Aya started looking for other exceptional musicians to make UNSUN a full-time band. Very soon Vaaver from INDUKTI and Heinrich who also plays bass in VESANIA teamed up with Mauser and Aya to form the band they are today.

To be fair though comparing Avenpitch leader and local electropunk ringleader Todd Millenacker to James Murphy & Co. also would have been apt with their two previous albums. Millenacker’s upbeat punchy songs avoid the dour goth-ish rut that too many other digi-rock bands fall into and he incorporates punk and metal influences bravely albeit sometimes clumsily. Avenpitch’s CD party is Saturday at Club Underground (9 p. Random mixAttention local Brit-rock fans: There’s a new blog in town called Brit Rock at the Top run by local tennis semi-pro Brody McCoy who has put together a lineup Saturday at the 400 Bar featuring three new local bands with overt U.
