Presenting Music Beyond No Borders Vol. 2
Jakarta Post – Jun 1, 2008
Recently on May 25 the supercool and peachy keen guys at YNM have released their second annual compilation called Music Beyond No Borders Vol. This compilation works as a decent sampler of music YNM has still is and will be releasing. 2 works off one very vast platform which is "rock music". The bands compiled in Vol. 2 provide various examples experimentations and explorations of that genre and beyond; be it surf rock drone metal death metal meets 8-bit chiptuning electro-deathrock down to your basic old buddy: the college indie-rock song… Here’s a track-by-track breakdown and quick bites to give you hints on what to expect of the compilation: "Gravedigger 69" by Gravedigger A powerful kick-start to this compilation featuring roaring and rolling thunderous guitars steady drumbeats over a cloud of effects and distortions and punk-esque lackadaisical vocals. "Wild Seahorses" by Southern Beach Terror A too cool for school surf-rock anthem filled to the brim with all the requirements of a good surf rock tune: calm cool swaggering guitars that stroll on like a gunslinger through swinging saloon doors looking for a fight flirtatious drum beats and cymbal play and plenty of crowd-rousing yells. "Hymn for a Friend in the Sky" by J. Irwin A nice little pop-rock ditty with smart bluesy guitar-work that flirts with light pentatonic touches over dreamy organs and laid-back sing-along vocals that’ll reside in your head by the 2nd verse is brought to you by this member of Brit-rock inspired dream-pop collective Bangkutaman taken from his solo EP of the same title. "Kecuali Mengenang Betismu Oh Sembadra" by Sungsang Lebam Telak The very first Indonesian act featured on Underground Hum: Main Stage. These certifiably insane Bandung-based Jazz-mutilators are definitely one of the most interesting and worth-catching local bands out there.

In April's monthly chart Kilterr's "Higher" reached number 2. This is a band on the cusp of great things. Kilterr have a unique sound coming from diverse musical backgrounds with a taste of many genres and take their influences from rock metal indie and punk. Along with the distinctive driving rhythm section which is key to the Kilterr sound Barry John Maher's crunching guitar and expressive vocals are joined by piano that drives the music giving their sound the edge that few bands can boast. Kilterr have been compared to Therapy? Sonic Youth Ash and Pinback to name a few. Next stop for Kilterr… This is a band on the cusp of great things. De Burgh still ‘dreaming of the wide world’
Tehran Times – Jun 1, 2008
Due to the restricted atmosphere of the time they listened to records furtively circulated among friends and their circle of schoolmates. However times have changed and the new generation?s taste in music and entertainment differs from their predecessors who mostly were interested in songs by de Burgh and foreign bands such as Modern Talking. Young people do not listen to this kind of music anymore. They prefer to listen to rap hip hop techno and heavy metal as well as pop singers working openly or underground in Iran. However it would not be so bad for them to experience a de Burgh live promenade concert which would provide an atmosphere in which they could release some energy in ways usually not tolerated by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. It seems that Rajabpur and the Taraneh Sharghi staff will have to spend many difficult days striving to convince the Culture Ministry to allow the dream of de Burgh concerts to come true. De Burgh said at the press conference ?This has been a dream of mine since I was a little boy? I am here to see and play for people.

Youngstown Vindicator – Jun 1, 2008
?After Vexfest last year we were sitting around talking and said ?We should have a JonesFest. ? Then we thought why don?t we? DeCapua said. Vexfest was another outdoor music event downtown with more of a metal bent. Based on the early turnout DeCapua predicts JonesFest aimed at ?anyone who appreciated the Youngstown music scene? said its organizer will become an annual thing although it may be pushed back to June to ensure weather cooperates. As bands and vendors transformed the area between Wick Avenue and Phelps Street the sun was welcome but strong winds were not. Performers Kevin Sheffar and Jason Greenamyer said their cards could blow away during a trick though the gusts didn?t stop Sheffar from making a nickel disappear into a sealed bottle of iced tea. Greenamyer burned through tricks literally first lighting his wallet on fire and then turning $1 bills into hundreds.

The gig guide: Open mike nights in Roanoke
Roanoke Times – Jun 1, 2008
You know who you are — working all week wishing you could just be playing your guitar or your drums or singing. Or maybe you’re looking for some cheap but quality music to set your ears on?Roanoke seems to have an answer to your problem with at least eight open-microphone nights — most of them free — at several nightspots catering to a variety of sounds several nights a week. Wayne “Range Da Messenga” Hancock II who hosts the Sunday night open-mike at the Mix (formerly the Mix One6) a nightspot at 16 Campbell Ave. laid out the idea in lyrical form. On a recent Sunday his band Duality played a midtempo acid-jazz groove behind him. “Feel like you can take a load off” Hancock sang… “It’s the one escape you get from the real world” said Morse 23 a drummer whose “real job” is sous chef at The Landing a Smith Mountain Lake restaurant. “Music is the ultimate outlet to express yourself. I can’t wait to get up there and play!”Blue 5 Restaurant Blues JamIt was a pretty quiet night on May 14 at the monthly blues jam with maybe 25 people in the room. The playing was based on the typical 12-bar blues progression chords that everyone knows.

Atlanta Journal Constitution – Jun 1, 2008
Sunday the two beat Anthony Medel and Fred Souza 18-21 21-15 15-10 to win the $20000 first prize at the AVP Atlanta Open. When Gibb and Rosenthal squirted victory champagne all over Patterson and other fans who sat within range of the winners’ stand it was their way of saying thanks to the man they call “BP” and to the city in which they have won back-to-back titles. A few thousand fans looked on in the enclosed metal-bleacher stadium. Many onlookers were dressed like players the shirtless men in shorts and shades the women in sleeveless outfits soaking up the almost-summer sun. The Atlanta Open isn’t just a sports event; it’s a three-day geographical marvel. “They do a really good job of making this feel like a beach to us” Gibb said. “This is always one of the best stops on tour” said Misty May-Treanor who teamed with Kerri Walsh to win the women’s title 21-7 21-17 over Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan… But there’s no guarantee Atlanta will remain on the AVP Tour in 2009. The 2008 event was the third in a three-year contract and though Atlanta Sports Council President Gary Stokan said attendance was strong with sold-out crowds Saturday and Sunday he continues to seek corporate sponsorships. He’d like to expand the tournament into a summer festival with music and more food options and he’d like to leave the stadium up permanently and use it for a tennis tournament and other entertainment events. But all of that takes money. Fans paid $20 or $35 for tournament tickets to Sunday’s competition. Thirty minutes after the final match more than 50 people stood in line to pose for photos with or get autographs from May-Treanor and Walsh the Olympic gold medalists and world champions and the top U.
