The companies organizing the shows often say the claims are frivolous – and at times they are right. Heck even ‘80s metal dudes Def Leppard have a country hit now. Put a cowboy hat on Ozzy throw a pedal steel guitar into the mix and you could probably pawn the Dark Lord of heavy metal off as a modern country artist. That should offend anyone with ears and taste but it doesn’t seem to bother many of the people who buy modern country recordings. Oh and for “modern country” read “pop music with a mild Southern accent… Put a cowboy hat on Ozzy throw a pedal steel guitar into the mix and you could probably pawn the Dark Lord of heavy metal off as a modern country artist. That should offend anyone with ears and taste but it doesn’t seem to bother many of the people who buy modern country recordings. Oh and for “modern country” read “pop music with a mild Southern accent. ” Five years ago Jewel was trying to reinvent herself as a dance-pop diva. She failed probably because the folks who bought her debut “Pieces of You” wanted sing-songy earnest folk music preferably with lyrics about how rotten guys are. “Perfectly Clear” will probably appeal to the old-school Jewel lover because — despite production and banjo pickin’ by John Rich of Big & Rich — it’s essentially folk music with pop song construction rooting it to the tried and true. If Jewel is both dubious as a country singer and completely lacking in invention she still manages to score points with her melodies which can occasionally transcend their similarity to nursery rhymes and truly soar.
