‘Rock Parade’ set to rock Jakarta

Now rockers will get the chance to "regain" their glory with the Jakarta Rock Parade a three-day rock festival that will gather rock stars from different generations. The festival which like the Java Jazz will involve multiple stages will be held on July 11-13 at the Senayan Tennis Indoor stadium. "It is part of our appreciation of Indonesian rock music which once dominated the country’s music scene. This is also to promote Indonesia as one of the biggest rock centers in Asia" the event’s organizer Jimmy Johansyah said. More than 60 local rock bands from various rock sub-genres ranging from classic acts like Roxx Flowers Voodoo and Gang Pegangsaan to alternative acts like Rumah Sakit The Upstairs and Efek Rumah Kaca have confirmed their participation. Metal bands such as Getah and Koil are also on the list. Andy Tielman a member of the Indonesian legendary rock band Tielman Brothers who made their recordings and gained popularity in Europe in the 1960s will make a special appearance at the event… This is also to promote Indonesia as one of the biggest rock centers in Asia" the event’s organizer Jimmy Johansyah said. A devoted karaoke singer Hickey won the duet category with his friend Raymond Gladney. The two men patched together a dramatic rendition of Simply Red’s “If You Don’t Me By Now” acting as kindergarten friends turned rivals for the affection of a girl mixing in other genres of music such as hip-hop. Hickey who goes by the moniker “Raydog” specializes in 1980s metal music but has been mellowing to country because it’s a more popular genre and “not everyone can relate to big hair” he said. Contestants have two categories to chose from — country and Top 40 Bolton said. Most favor country the men gravitating toward Toby Keith the women Carrie Underwood. Classic acts such as the Beatles or Johnny Cash are also popular choices Bolton said. Contestants are also welcome to bring in their own CDs.

story continues below Concerts will be held at a North Apollo bar tonight and Falcon Park in Ford City next weekend for Mikey whose mother lives just south of Indiana. The event is a precursor to a larger gathering in August that Rock for Life is holding to help Mikey. The nonprofit organization sponsors music festivals and concerts to provide financial support to ailing children and their families in the area said board president Steve Craven. The event has gained momentum in its last nine years Craven said and smaller concerts are being held to promote the two days of music later this summer in Iselin (Indiana County). It “snowballed into something bigger than I ever thought it would he said. The Rock for Life main concert will be held on August 1 and 2 at the Iselin Ball Field in Young Township. “It’s just all a good time and for a good cause” he said… they’re smiling they’re playing with things they just want to be a kid” Craven said. The concerts not only help a needy family but also local musicians he said. Next weekend’s concert will feature blues country metal acoustic and more. Besides rocking in front of hundreds of people at the concerts Craven said one of the reasons he likes participating in the events with his band After the Fall is the “gut check. Helping someone else while playing music reminds him that even when he’s having a bad day “things could be a lot worse” he said. “It’s just a good pick me up” he said. In a statement issued today drummer Hrymr said “We are truly sorry that Thorbj?has decided to leave the band. He has been a central part of Helheim since he joined us in 1999. We owe many fantastic riffs and great ideas to that weird mind of his! Along with Lindheim and others he intends to focus on his project SINKING SEA and we wish him great success for the future. On a positive note though we have not had to go through a long process to find his replacement… To us it seemed like a great way to launch Kaoskult by doing something that would teach the new generation about their Norse heritage. It appears to have struck a chord with many many people on all levels. From fans who wished their own education systems would allow them to explore different types of music to people who applauded the idea of teaching children about their heritage and doing it in a way that made it interesting and fun”.
