Mock stars: The rise of comedy on the indie music circuit
Denver Post – May 27, 2008
Not rock stars mind you but college rock bands. Instead of comedy clubs they perform at dive bars rock festivals and art galleries. They release albums on indie and metal labels. They even tour with groups at times playing before and after the music. “There is a commonality between a lot of the bands and the comics” said Cross who has long championed acts like the Strokes Superchunk and Guided by Voices. “There’s a kind of an awe and overly undue amount of respect given to the other person. People are like ‘Man I can’t believe you just get up by yourself and talk for an hour and a half.

He’s been nominated for many Grammys and finally won one for2000′s Symphony No. 1 which featured jazz and rock playersperforming within classical song structures. And while hiseasygoing pop sound has little in common with heavy metal hirsutethrash band Anthrax covered his song Got the Time. In perhaps the strangest collaboration of all he performed onan album by Star Trek’s William Shatner (Captain Kirk) whichincluded a cover of Pulp’s Common People. Given the diverse terrain he’s covered it seems fair enough tosuggest that he’s a well-rounded musician. But this innocuousoffering touches a nerve in Jackson. “It offends me this idea that I have a checklist of musicalgenres and I go down it checking them off” he says… “It offends me this idea that I have a checklist of musicalgenres and I go down it checking them off” he says. “That makes mesound very phoney. I’m just interested in lots of different kindsof music and when I create something I just go with my gut and itusually comes out as sounding eclectic. Jackson was born in Staffordshire England but has spent mostof the past 20 years living in New York City whose gritty urbanlandscapes inform much of his work. He briefly returned home butafter finding it difficult to re-adjust relocated to Berlin wherehe recorded his new album Rain. Other than the persistent precipitation that inspired thealbum’s title he says Berlin had little influence on thealbum. “Everyone wants to think there’s some kind of magic somethingin the air that influences music but there’s not” he continues.

Somewhere between reconciliation and an uneasy truce
Jerusalem Post – May 27, 2008
Maybe Mascis had been coaching Barlow on interview techniques. Or maybe the members of Dinosaur Jr. treat societal conventions like they make music – uncompromising raw and straight from heart. If they don’t feel like being gracious they’re not going to put on a showbiz front and go through the motions. Or just call it real. Fortunately Barlow quickly warmed up and while far from gregarious amiably discussed the band’s stormy past and its unlikely return with its original lineup of Mascis Barlow and drummer Emmett Murphy (Murph) to record an excellent new album Beyond and once again tour the world… as major influences on their musical orientation. Someone described them as Black Sabbath performing Beatles songs with Neil Young on lead guitar. In a previously published interview Barlow explained the blend: “We loved speed metal. and we loved wimpy-jangly stuff. ” Mascis called it “ear-bleeding country… and we loved wimpy-jangly stuff. ” Mascis called it “ear-bleeding country. ” Listening to their oeuvre today it sounds positively mainstream. While Mascis kept the band name through much of the ’90s when the band enjoyed its widest recognition the consensus of hardcore fans was that the original lineup could never be matched. A few tentative meetings between Mascis and Barlow beginning in the ’90s laid the groundwork for a reunion tour in 2005 which coincided with the rerelease of the band’s first three albums.

I remember nothing but noise and the sensation of my eardrums imploding to this post-butt rock metal version of a Jackson Pollock splatter painting. I would have rather had more Flight of the Conchords. Last night the last headliner The Flaming Lips gave the audience a close encounter of the kind only this band could pull off: a UFO that descended from the ceiling of the main stage unloading the aliens known as the Lips including lead singer Wayne Coyne who walked down in a clear inflatable ball (see Grant Haller’s photo) surfing the crowd. For a minute he was like one of those hamsters running in a cage before he made it back on stage. The night before the Lips premiered their homemade sci-fi movie “Christmas on Mars.
