Yes I admit I can be a little sarcastic
Appleton Post Crescent – Apr 18, 2008
It’s not that I dislike these bands. If you looked at my iPod you’d find a lot of them happily coexisting alongside groups that fall outside the mainstream or at least what’s mainstream for our neck of the woods. And if anyone wants to discuss thrash metal bands and guitar slingers from the ’80s my e-mail address is on the right. But I’ve been covering the Fox Valley entertainment scene for about seven years and I do find it a little amusing and somewhat maddening that this summer’s concert lineup is pretty much the same as it was when I began this job. Here’s the thing: I want the Fox Cities to continue to grow and evolve. I’ve lived here since 1993 and have seen the changes that have taken place over that time. We have better restaurants better theater better comedy… better more diverse entertainment options all around than we did back in the day which coincides with the growth and increased diversity of the population. But we have not changed when it comes to our musical tastes and I can’t figure out why that is. As a person who enjoys seeking out new music I admit it’s difficult not to roll my eyes when I write that the singer of Poison is coming to town and a couple weeks later write that he’ll be playing here again in a couple of months. Seriously are we that set in our musical ways? You know there is a lot of great music out there that was written after 1987 both by local bands writing their own songs and nationally touring artists that don’t fit neatly into a mainstream radio format. The best shows I have seen in the area were the ones where I wasn’t familiar with the artist like the two times Australian guitar demon Jeff Lang played at Mongo’s the lazy Sunday when the Legendary Shack Shakers tore the roof off of Tom’s Garage and the night the Greenhornes and local band the Tantrums made 29 Steps in Green Bay feel like an awesome garage party. None of those venues exist anymore. You can blame it on the economy management location or whatever but a lot of it has to do with the fact that there’s a prevailing mindset that says “If they’re charging me $5 then it better be something I’ve heard before.
‘Teeth’ needs serious correction
News & bserver – Apr 18, 2008
Alternately brooding plotting or eerily cheerful Jess Weixler gives an astonishing performance making Dawn seem righteous sensible and when necessary vengeful. To counter this pure pastel-appareled blond blue-eyed innocent there’s Dawn’s creepy stepbrother Brad. Brilliant and often menacing John Hensley embodies precisely just who to avoid: he’s tattooed wears combat boots listens to heavy metal music casually beds girls galore. He smokes and is kept company by an extremely vicious caged dog. As if to say ‘Don’t say I didn’t warn you” Lichtenstein includes scenes of a high-school health class — where the page offering a diagram of the female anatomy has been covered; the male body drawing and explicit details are left for the students to study. The course content is similarly censored. And just for sheer irony each sexually suggestive scene is accompanied by hallowed sacred church choir music.
pposing the arrow: Being the mixture of music
collegian.com – Apr 18, 2008
The members of pposing The Arrow a local Fort Collins who play April 19 at the Buckhorn Barn don’t believe in having only one particular sound. “Instead of trying to portray one sound we incorporate different sounds” said senior equine science and business double major Chris Seegers the lead singer and guitarist of the band. Their sound is reminiscent of samba pop funk jams and harder metal music with a little bit of jazz and blues thrown into the mix. All of the band members bring different musical backgrounds to the group creating this unique sound. Seegers has played in several different bands over the years focusing on acoustic guitar music. Junior landscape architecture major Thom Whitney the bassist of the band brings a funk background; he is known as the master of grooves. To bring out the jazz sounds within the music the group looks to drummer Alex Bennett a senior natural resource management major and keyboardist Trevor Simonton a junior journalism major and reporter for the Collegian who also has a little bit of a blues background as well.
Anvil’s heavy metal magic shines at Hot Docs
CTV.ca – Apr 18, 2008
“I felt it was important for the truth about Anvil to be acknowledged” says Gervasi. Born in London England in 1966 Gervasi first saw Anvil play in a local club in 1982. “Anyone who knows the music from those times knows how important Anvil was to the heavy metal movement. Just listen to a song like ’666′ on ‘Metal on Metal. ‘ It’s widely considered to be one of the first speed metal songs. That’s a year or two before Anthrax Megadeath or Slayer. ” As Gervasi says “That speed rhythm intensity and power you hear in Metallica and other bands like them comes from Anvil.
Rockers host Dallas concert in benefit for Multiple Sclerosis
The NT Daily – Apr 18, 2008
For this show the hard-rock anthem will not be “stick it to the man” but instead they aim to “stick it” to multiple sclerosis. “People think that heavy metal rocker guys are scary and worship the devil but that’s just not true” SiK drummer Keith Wishon said. “They can be some of the most big-hearted people you could ever find. These “rocker guys” are baring their big hearts with the first annual Rockers for MS at 7 p… Wishon said it’s an opportunity for students to become more aware of MS. “Most college students are thinking about their own lives or school and may not know or see what MS really is” he said. “But if they like rock music not only will they have a great time at a show with 14 of Dallas’ best bands but they will indirectly be funding research for a cause they may not know about. Wishon warns that there’s a lot more to this show than people may expect. “We’re a couple of big time burly guys with long hair and lots of tattoos” Wishon said. “We’d give the shirt off our back if you need it. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.
Virtual metal band Dethklok at Gothic in Englewood in June
Greeley Tribune – Apr 18, 2008
In this town I know that could get me ostracized but for the sake of good taste in music it’s a chance I’m willing to take. )But one metal band has captured my attention more than the others and it’s members are animated.
Apocalyptica: cello quartet goes heavy metal
Deseret News – Apr 18, 2008
“It was a nice accident that it caught on. There was never a time when we felt we needed to bring classical and heavy metal together. Because to us the emotions that we feel when we listen to certain heavy metal songs can also be felt when we listen to certain classical pieces. “Music is about emotions. No matter what style they can cause you to feel the same moods. However thanks to Metallica’s popularity Apocalyptica caught the attention of Mercury Records. “The sad thing was the fact that I was only 16 at the time” said Kivilaakso.
