The Gauntlet – Apr 19, 2008
It is the band’s dedication and ambition that has allowed them to rise to their current status and will help them to continue their success. It was their shared belief that music can deeply impact a person that brought founding members Vince Apostol (guitar) Matt Apostol (drums) and Daniel Moran (guitar) together to form Dear Life. The addition of vocalist Kevin Castellon and bassist Mike Trujillo in 2004 rounded out the band’s line up and Dear Life was ready to move forward full steam ahead. Since 2004 the band has earned themselves spots on tours with Arsonists Get All The Girls (Century Media) and Catherine (Rise) and more recently shared the stage with the likes of such heavy hitters as Every Time I Die and Chiodos… It is the band’s dedication and ambition that has allowed them to rise to their current status and will help them to continue their success. Music Review: Roots shows versatility in CMU show
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Apr 19, 2008
Where do we start? How ’bout a 20-minute version of Dylan’s “Masters of War” that started with the words sung to the melody of the national anthem then transitioned into a tuba solo before kicking into high gear with a quick blast of “Dazed and Confused” a glo-stick drum solo from ?uestlove and a crushing coda of Hendrix’s “Machine Gun. ” It was like a one-band 20-minute Woodstock. How ’bout a 15-minute “You Got Me” that involved a George Benson-like jazz scat vocal that almost sounded like steel drums into a blur of “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” and a prog-metal finale of The Mars Volta’s “Con Safo. How ’bout staccato rapper Black Thought schooling the college crowd on “Hip Hop 101″ kicking “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” into the Sugarhill Gang’s “Jump on It” Talib Kweli’s “Just to Get By” and l’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” to name a few. The Roots — who also got jazzy on “Mellow My Man” and soulful on “The Seed” and Curtis Mayfield’s “Move n Up” — are a seamless groove band with no boundaries. And it sounded even better live than it looks on paper. Scott Mervis can be reached at.

It puts things in perspective for what a lucky dog I am. Pierce now works at the CPS hot line. Several creative types work alongside her including singer Janis Stinson and members of the heavy metal band Dax. Although they differ in musical styles everyone shares a similar sense of humor and a sense of camaraderie. “There’s a lot of really dark shocking and weird humor down there as I’m sure there is at a lot of police stations” Pierce says. “You have to have that release and the togetherness of all laughing at something. Pierce says it comes out in her writing… Calling up friends like Joe Ely to perform her songs they organized a tribute record and donated its proceeds to charity. The compilation “Across the Great Divide: The Songs of Jo Carol Pierce” won record of the year and producers of the year at the 1993 Austin Music Awards. The album also founded a cult following for its subject. Two years later Pierce released “Bad Girls” her own recording of songs and monologues. Campbell was inspired by Pierce’s fearlessness. “She wasn’t the greatest singer at the time but her attitude was ‘Who cares?’ ” he says.

Most importantly the group is now actively seeking for a new vocalist. Here’s a statement from the band:”A lot of you have been wondering what the status of Nevea Tears has been in the last half a year or so. Many of you have seen us live during this time and have an idea what has been going on but we have not made any official announcements. Immediately following our release of ‘Run with the Hunted’ our second full-length under Eulogy Recordings John (vocalist) Dom (bassist) and Stephen (drummer) all decided for personal reasons to part ways with the band.

In “Badlands” “Replacements” and the new “Elemental Moves” Ms. Heineman shows a fascination with the pas de deux but doesn’t demonstrate enough variety to give her partnering fertile texture. Set to music by Shelby Gaines and Kareem Devlin “Elemental Moves” explores the sensibilities of water metal fire and air using fairly clichéd movements and literal sound influences. Anna Kirker and Kfir Danieli demonstrate the sensation of water by repeatedly curling their arms overhead as if mimicking waves. The duets continue until the final “air” section in which Matthew Prescott holds Mercedes Ingram aloft to the distant sound of wind gusts. All the elements converge in Ms. Heineman’s awkwardly constructed finale.
