Music Review: Def Leppard `Sparkles’ on new studio CD
San Francisco Chronicle – Apr 29, 2008
tmpl –>(04-29) 12:32 PDT (AP) –Def Leppard “Songs from the Sparkle Lounge” (Bludgeon Riffola): Closing in on 30 years as arena rock staples give Def Leppard credit for keeping it fresh and somewhat surprising on their first studio album in six years. There’s quite a range here from the nu-metal feel of the opening track “Go” (think Def Leppard-meets-Tool) to the duet with country superstar Tim McGraw on “Nine Lives. ” (Thanks again Bon Jovi for making ALL the rock bands skew country. ) “C’mon C’mon” has a much more ’70s feel sounding like Cheap Trick playing Gary Glitter’s “Rock ‘N’ Roll Part II. But the best moment here comes on the ballad “Love” in which the band channels their inner Queen. From the opening acoustic riff that’s very reminiscent of “Love f My Life” to the melody that’s more than a little similar to “Jealousy” the four-part wall-of-harmony that adorned so many Queen classics and multi-layered electric guitar that could have been played by Brian May himself this track is sheer audio joy.

And everything felt big and dynamic. I think we lost that along the way. Based on the climate of the music industry videos have started getting smaller and smaller. You’ve been feeling that visually. Taking it back to a more grandiose way of delivering videos is more expensive but 50 can afford it. “It starts getting pricey but you have to find creative ways to do things” Terrero said. “We found creative ways to make the sets look bigger than they appear.
When it comes to music taste everyone uses different buds

In truth I?m attracted to any piece of music that is widely considered atrocious since there?s something undeniably compelling about an artist or album that manages to draw ire and cause the majority to recoil in distress. In the past this has led me to seek out such albums as Lou Reed?s hilariously annoying Metal Machine Music a double album of literally nothing but offensive layered guitar feedback and the Rolling Stones? Their Satanic Majesties Request?Brian Jones? muddy druggy and vaguely brilliant answer to 1967. Sometimes this penchant of mine to explore infamously bad music leads me to uncharted regions of discomfort?like when I forced myself to endure Bruce Willis? The Return of Bruno just for kicks or made the mistake of thinking the Butthole Surfers? nightmarish Locust Abortion Technician might actually be worth hearing. The reason I?m willing to put up with this sort of torturous experimentation is that ?bad? often translates to ?good? when you look through the magnifying glass of novelty and I wouldn?t want to miss out. Besides those artists who take a risk and end up making something mind-numbingly dreadful?rather than playing the pandering game of audience appeasement?are the coolest of them all because they?re doing exactly what they want to do. What could be more rock ?n? roll than that? Another important consideration is for music to be legitimately aggravating it has to be really popular too.

The band which was originally named for Black Sabbath’s first and most regressive incarnation has spawned its own imitators: The arty doom-metal band Sunn ))) began as an Earth tribute act and Boris Sleep and hordes of other experimental-music royalty have hailed the Seattle quartet as the pinnacle of post-Melvins metal. But Earth has long since moved on and the band’s new obsessionsâ€â€sedate chiming bursts of organs guitars and drumsâ€â€are as compelling as their hugely influential old ones.
