Lou Reed: Still not afraid to grate
News & bserver – Apr 25, 2008
Peder Zane & Danny HooleyComment on this story Lou Reed: Still not afraid to grateWay back in 1975 Lou Reed put out one of the most perverse albums of all time. Titled “Metal Machine Music” it consisted of a bit more than an hour of screeching feedback spread over four vinyl sides. Last year Reed put out an album that is either the evil or kinder gentler twin of “Metal Machine Music. ” Titled “Hudson River Wind Meditations” (Sounds True Music) it consisted of a bit more than an hour of increasingly grating ambience. Visceral impact aside these albums actually have a lot in common. Each consists of four tracks of “music” and each is utterly confounding in a not-very-pleasant way.

So ever since like most of the band’s fans we’d simply assumed Lee was done with the Crüe — that perhaps spinning records as a celebrity DJ was more his speed. Considering all this Metal File must admit we were awfully confused by Lee’s appearance with the band last week in Los Angeles when the boys revealed their upcoming. So when we had the opportunity to sit down with the band following the press conference we just had to ask: What’s the deal with Tommy?f course the Crüe have been in the rock and roll game long enough (make that 27 years) to know how to dodge a few questions — which is precisely what they did. “You know it’s so funny” started Sixx whose side project Sixx:A… “While all our spineless contemporaries reach for the stars we’ve returned to our roots” guitarist Justin Brannan said in a statement. “The new songs are short fast hard and mean. We wrote an album to remind us of the stuff we grew up on the music that got us into hardcore when we were teenagers. We harnessed that raw energy and power the unbridled passion of those days at CBGB and basements and VFW halls across the country sleeping on concrete floors and shoplifting for fun back when it felt like you were really part of something different. We’ve checked the rock and roll ambitions and delusional fantasies at the door and wrote a hardcore record like only we knew how.
