were just goofing around through the ’90s only to awaken one day to try to be relevant again. Neil Young famously said Harvest put him in the middle of the road so he headed for a ditch. Whether it’s the Violent Femmes awakening on The Blind Leading the Naked or Lou Reed’s droning indulgence on Metal Machine Music artists don’t like to stay in that part of the road. It’s not just critics. There’s also a cultural consensus regarding artists’ bodies of work. Perhaps the CD is responsible.

The higher-ups need to see that it fits the days talking points and certain things just aren’t meant for us to see. There is a fear there that if they break a story first and it winds up being one of the things they weren’t supposed to mention maybe they will be losing their job. There’s a beautiful irony in the market slaughtering all of the corporations which cheated it; I welcome this cataclysm much like the one in the music industry because in the long term we’ll be better off.
