Twelve Kansas City bands share their thoughts on Armageddon before…
Pitch Weekly – Feb 21, 2008
“Those who are able to move freely and live off the land will survive. Touring bands would thus lead the charge into an unknown future. The music in this era will ask how a loving God could allow such a catastrophe. Metal music will become an outlet for the masses whose lives have been destroyed by the disaster. The messages sent by metal bands will either unite our society as a whole or plunge it deeper into the endless cascade of suffering disease and false hopes. In this barbaric environment metal will provide a new release of energy a new sense of security and a new tool for social change. Whatever happens Godzai guitarist T-Rez wants his group in the middle of the chaos.

“ne time my friends and I went there and there was some metal band playing and there was a huge moshpit and we were sitting back in the booths as spectators and it was way more interesting because we thought the band actually (was bad) but we had a ball. That was it for me it wasn’t about any particular band; it was just the fun atmosphere. ” It’s unclear as of now what the final plans are for the venue but according to Folgner the space could possibly be turned into a Hollywood-style nightclub. The final live music show is at 8 p. Friday featuring metal acts Rotting Christ Immolation and Belphegor. Contact the writer: 714-796-3570 or.

JHU music fans refuse to explore other genres
Johns Hopkins News-Letter – Feb 21, 2008
When business was slow we had nothing better to do than sit around in the back of the store talking meaningless nothings to pass the time. That was when I met Donovan a 6-foot-5-inch giant with tattoos scrawled across his arms and gauge earrings the size of pepperonis. n a particularly slow evening I asked him what type of music he listened to. He responded “Death metal. ” I was blown away. With all the different types of great music available today I couldn’t imagine someone restricting himself to one particular style for his entire life.
Church arsonist avoids more jail time

Kunnas termed youth “cavalier cocky” and “proud of what you did” and called the crime itself “a despicable act. Your actions were planned were deliberate and it‘s indeed fortunate others weren‘t injured” said Kunnas. Watkins said the youth was influenced by black metal music and felt he had to punish the churches for misdeeds committed during the Middle Ages. Kunnas noted that the teen took the work of hundreds of congregation members to build and maintain the churches and “just dismissed it because you don‘t believe what they believe. And they have an absolute right to be very upset with you and yet their leaders have reconciled their differences with you. Watkins told the court that pastors from both churches met with the youth in the courthouse cell area and were hopeful the young man would redeem himself. While in custody the teen has been attending school and art classes and is learning to express his beliefs through writing Watkins said noting the written word visual arts and particularly music have been identified as positive outlets for his client.
Middle East metal fans fight for right to rock
Georgia Straight – Feb 21, 2008
gif’> printMiddle East metal fans fight for right to rockBy John LucasIf you think the people around you don?t quite get your taste in music just be glad you?re not a heavy-metal freak in Morocco. In 2003 14 Casablanca metalheads musicians and fans were jailed for disturbing the public order and for possessing CDs and T-shirts that were supposedly anti-Islamic. For many westerners the surprising part of this story is not that the rockers? tastes were considered subversive by their elders (that scenario should be familiar to anyone who has ever been a teenager) but that Morocco has a thriving heavy-metal scene. According to Mark LeVine a history professor at the University of California at Irvine the Muslim-majority countries of the Middle East and North Africa are full of such underground cultural movements which go against western perceptions of the region. LeVine has spent much of the past 15 years travelling in the Middle East.
