The Gauntlet :: HeWhoCorrupts – Heavy Metal – News – HeWhoCorrupts…
The Gauntlet – Jan 19, 2008
I thought myself crazy to take a jaunt downtown on such a night but the line of fans waiting outside the doors of the venue (some of whom had been there for quite a while) made me seem tame. The wind chill was thankfully mild but even so it was a night cold enough “to freeze your boogers” as one fan put it. The local music scene in Chicago is nothing if not dedicated however and The Beat Kitchen’s narrow back room was filling up well by the beginning of the show. This was no less than I had expected considering the show we were getting and for all of $8 besides. This evening marked the sophomore record release of Chicago’s death-grind duo Plague Bringer entitled ‘Life Songs in a Land of Death’ with the added bonus of Yakuza and label-mates Holy Roman Empire and Hewhocorrupts opening the evening. Although I’ve lived in Chicago for a decade now and have heard numerous stories about Hewhocorrupts on stage this show marked my first experience with them (and all the other bands as well). The tales of their exploits were usually half-reverent half-bewildered and quite nebulous making them hard to understand… My hat is off to themfor now my pants stay on. Following them in one of the most jarring band-to-band shifts I have ever witnessed was Holy Roman Empire. Despite their heavy distortion this group has no metal to speak of at its core and their place on Hewhocorrupts Inc. is a mystery to me. The straight 8th note verses 4-5-1 progressions the catchy power chord-driven choruses and reverb-drenched tremolo leads are all clear and unabashed descendants of the alternative indie pop and post-rock movements of the past few years. Flyleaf meets a less methadone-addled Interpol to put it roughly. Still they can certainly write some solidly entertaining songs and everyone in the audience was polite at the very least while more of us were nodding along unconsciously with the beat.

Wi-Fi music polling device takes heat off the DJ

Subscribe and get 4 free issues. Ever had a party ruined by your host’s atrocious taste in music? Then you might welcome a system that polls the musical preferences of party-goers and creates a playlist to keep everyone happy. Developed by computer scientists at the University of California Los Angeles US the Smart Party system relies on people carrying Wi-Fi-enabled music-playing devices. Software running on each device beams each user’s playlist to a nearby computer which is connected to an amp and speakers. The computer takes a poll of titles to work out the most popular genre and can also copy and play tracks from each device. It can then play music from the most popular overall music genre or tracks supplied by each party-goer in turn… This system can respond to playlists stored on notebook computers and in future should work with portable music players. Since it can detect the proximity of people by triangulating wireless signals when someone has left a room their playlist can be removed from the musical ballot to reflect the music of the remaining occupants. The system is democratic too: “In our current implementation all votes are equal – one device might propose heavy metal another pop” Eustice says. Licensed to rock? There is just one thorny problem with the scheme – digital rights management (DRM). This is because the central PC temporarily copies tracks from each device before playing them which may be deemed a copyright infringement. “We could deal with content that has no DRM issues – free content – but that’s not a very realistic scenario” Eustice says. “So we may need to figure out ways for the mobile device to temporarily and securely transfer its licence to play the music to the computer.

Three: We don’t have good management. “) And Anvil’s music may not be my cup of white-hot metal but Robb and Kudlow’s perseverance moved me: They have not simply hung onto dreams they have hung on to day jobs. They’ve been friends to each other and good to their families. And finally most importantly in a world that says ‘quit’ they have not. Early in Anvil! The Story of Anvil we see the band play a Romanian venue that could hold thousands.

Musicians are gathered inside in front of a wood stove picking on an assortment of banjos mandolins bass guitars and one fiddle. It is as Nelia Hyatt’s granddaughter says a room full of joy. Hyatt is the little woman with white hair perched on a metal stool off to one side clapping her hands and softly singing along with her favorite tunes. At 90 years old she still welcomes musicians into her home where they’ve come for 60 years making this likely the longest running old-time music jam in these parts. “We grew up a-singing” Nelia Hyatt said and she plans to keep up the singing for as long as she lives. There is nothing fancy about Nelia Hyatt’s Music House. Worn linoleum covers the floor… At 90 years old she still welcomes musicians into her home where they’ve come for 60 years making this likely the longest running old-time music jam in these parts. “We grew up a-singing” Nelia Hyatt said and she plans to keep up the singing for as long as she lives. There is nothing fancy about Nelia Hyatt’s Music House. Worn linoleum covers the floor. The light is fluorescent. The furniture is a mishmash of folding wooden and metal chairs and old car seats propped against the walls of the garage. ff to one side there’s a coffee pot and sweets and snacks donations appreciated.
