textContenturl:window. href} {button:true} );Plenty of metal bands seesaw between polar opposites contrasting red-eyed rage with summery hope-filled melody. But few explore the numerous emotional shades between black and white and even fewer do so while experimenting with Spanish Asian Middle Eastern and classical music. “The goal isn’t just to mix so many different influences and sounds but to put them together with this very heavy stuff and have them fit perfectly” he said. “The music that we make doesn’t just sound like a gathering of parts — all the sounds… “The goal isn’t just to mix so many different influences and sounds but to put them together with this very heavy stuff and have them fit perfectly” he said. “The music that we make doesn’t just sound like a gathering of parts — all the sounds. work together in a straight line. “Metal has been dead in the world for the past 10 years” said Dugan a 1987 Parma High School graduate. “I think music and stuff you hear on the radio today the overall level of talent has declined in the past 10 years. We do it because we love metal. We like writing the music and we enjoy the fact that we still have an old-school influence. We’re not going out on stage and just screaming and puking into the microphone. ur songs aren’t really complex and there are guys out there who are better than us talent-wise but I think we excel at songwriting. You can be the greatest guitar player in the world but if you can’t write a song it kind of doesn’t matter.

Where to be on New Year’s Eve
stuff.co.nz – Dec 28, 2007
DUX DE LUX: By far and away my pick for best New Year's Eve gig in Christchurch is presented by the Dux de Lux and Dub Conspiracy. Nu Year's Eve 2008 features the stunning live act Kora – possibly the best live act in New Zealand – who have a magnificent self-titled debut album out. They're sonic superheroes melding funk with a tinge of heavy metal and if you haven't seen them live yet you don't know what you've been missing. ld favourites Salmonella Dub perform as Salmonella Dub DJ Soundsystem (not to be confused with the live band) a variation on their usual sounds but sure to be as reliably good and mellow as ever and features the Mighty Asterix on the mic DJ's Rudeboy and Mant on decks and samples and Skitter on horns. I've been bowled over by the Sunshine Soundsystem the last few times I've seen them and combined with the rest of the line-up it's definitely good value for money. Since 2002 Pacific Underground has brought together a collective of Christchurch musicians to play in a big band for the pure joy of bringing the live sound of classic soul rhythm and blues and funk songs to the local stage. That big band is 14-piece soul review Soul Defined… P (Pacific Underground Music Production) which is well known for its tight rhythm section lead by Pos Mavaega and Chris Searle and has strong roots in funk soul and hip-hop. Limited tickets $59. 50 plus booking fee are available from Ticketek Real Groovy and the Dux de Lux. Co-headlining are A Trick of the Light (Pink Floyd tribute band) and Athenic.

From Britney Spears’ ongoing substance abuse and custody battle to the Eagles releasing an album some 25 years after the band’s last studio album to Led Zeppelin’s reunion for the Ahmet Ertegun tribute there was a lot of music talk. Some was bad (Spears’ dismal performance on the MTV Music Awards). Some was sad — the passing of Dan Fogelberg and Hawthorne Heights’ Casey Calvert and the cocaine overdose of Quiet Riot vocalist Kevin DuBrow. Some was boring (the overkill on Britney Spears). But some things were fun such as the aforementioned Eagles album “Long Road to Eden” outselling Britney Spears’ album “Blackout” by 500000 the first week of release. As of two weeks ago “Long Road ut of Eden” had sold more than 3 million copies becoming the fifth best-selling album of 2007… The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde is still cool to the point of belligerence. And while ZZ Top is the same three guys with the same three notes they still can rock.
