Rocking the world

Four decades after the words “heavy metal” were first used by the rock critic Lester Bangs to describe Black Sabbath the West Midlands is rightly celebrating its place as the epicentre of a cultural movement that has swept the globe. Heavy metal has long been sneered at by music snobs for being resolutely proletarian often aggressive and obsessed with macabre occult imagery. ver its 40-year history however it has achieved a level of worldwide ubiquity rivalled only by that of hip-hop. This year the Indian band Parikrama were chosen to support Iron Maiden on two dates in their UK tour. Subir Malik Parikrama’s keyboard player and manager tells me that heavy metal has “exploded” in popularity in India in the past five years. “Even though a minority of Indians speak English people here connect to rock music like crazy” he says.

Gone are the days where rap-rock bands ruled the tour – late 90s editions of the tour read like a who’s who of nu-metal. After a five-year hiatus from 2002-2005 the tour returned complete with a second stage and a new image. Hoping to move on from the mess that was the nu-metal craze in the late ’90s the tour tried to find its niche among the already crowded summer festival circuit by focusing on harder rock and metal bands that didn’t quite fit in with the popular Warped Tour or weren’t up to playing for zzy and Sharon sbourne’s now free zzfest. In an attempt to cash in with the less affluent crowd (read: poor college kids) the tour is advertising lawn tickets for prices as low as $10 – a third of what it costs to get into the hyper-popular Warped Tour. But if you want get up close at the tour’s stop this Saturday at Nissan Pavilion it’s going to cost you upwards of $75 making the Warped Tour which has no seats more bands and a much smaller price tag look like a bargain. Besides Korn this year’s tour features radio-friendly goth-rock sensation Evanescence and metal mainstay Atreyu. ther performers at the show include heavy-metal super group Hellyeah featuring ex-members of Pantera Korn label mates Droid female-fronted metal band Flyleaf and many other metal hard rock and hardcore bands… After finding replacements in Dark New Day drummer Will Hunt and guitarist Troy McLawhorthe band has found stability. “It’s made the shows definitely a lot better” Lee said of the band’s new lineup. “Everyone enjoys playing the music so everything feels really good right now. Despite the tour’s hard-rock focus Lee believes her band’s haunting vocals and instrumentation will fit in just fine. “I think if people have seen us live then they understand that we fit here. It’s always fun to turn people [into fans] because I feel like we have the ability to do that at our shows” she said. Falling in line with the heavier sound of this year’s festival is Atreyu a post-hardcore band which should feel right at home on the main stage.

If you haven’t heard of Global Seduction Radio we won’t blame you — it’s a local-access cable show that wants to mix the best of pie and Anthony Maxim Magazine and "Loveline" into a package with music and "tips" on dating and romance. It’s wildly hit and miss and relentlessly juvenile but we think that’s the point. Anyway hosts Shaun Cox and Jimmy Showtime are coming out from behind the microphones tonight to host Seductionfest 2007 which features live music by cover band 8 Track Jones and metal outfit Almost Human stand up comedians and DJ sets.
