Scarz Within: Nuthin’ Sacred 2 – The 7 – CD Music Review

These bands are considered the kings of power metal and remain the standard against which all power metal bands are judged. 20 years later power metal is alive and kickin’ ass thanks to bands like Children of Bodom and Nevermore. So how does Scarz Within measure up against these greats past and present? From top to bottom this album is a double-edged sword. The most obvious thing you’ll hear are the vocals for two reasons: It’s that 80′s metal voice love it or hate it and it’s turned up WAY LUDER than everything else. The problem isn’t so much the voice – some of metal’s best choruses were sung in a similar voice – as it is the vocal delivery… These bands are considered the kings of power metal and remain the standard against which all power metal bands are judged. 20 years later power metal is alive and kickin’ ass thanks to bands like Children of Bodom and Nevermore. Too bad for them because they lost their only chance at enjoying the best video game soundtracks brought to life. I found the audience who attended the concert at the Esplanade concert hall rather mutedquite unlike reactions from performances overseas where the audience would shout to conductor Arnie Roth telling him which video game music they wanted to hear. From the enhanced repacking of the many classic Super Mario beats to the tense epic suite of Metal Gear Solid and the lush cello rendition of Halo the music solidified the formerly unseen relationship between music writers and gamers. The majority of the audience that night probably heard of Super Mario but to finally listen to the suite from Super Mario Bros itself a mixture of music from the original Super Mario game the N64 version Gamecube and many others; the overall sensation was something only a true gamer could appreciate. After all only those who had played the game could have recognised the nuances and musical evolution of the Super Mario tune. The same can be said for the suites of Sonic The Hedgehog and Castlevania both iconic games. They had their music retooled for a new audience to appreciate.

There are occasional silences but I’m starting to understand the Finns a lot better. It’s not that they are shy quiet and reserved; they just think a lot before speaking. Antti tells me that the two most popular forms of music in Finland are death metal (as caricatured by Lordi Finland’s winners of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest and no nobody here takes them seriously either) and tango but the flyers in the window of Digelius allude to a much less bi-polar nightlife which my next sherpa will be taking care of. Martti has the night shift and walks me down Fredrikinkatu one of Punavuori’s main arteries as the midsummer sunlight twinkles on rows of townhouses. We go for a beer in Loose (Fredrikinkatu 34) where velveteen red walls stencilled artwork and mounted pictures of Iggy Pop suggest musical tastes that stretch beyond death metal. In Bar Moskva (Eerikinkatu 11) the interior seems to have been transplanted from 1980s Moscow with an ancient radio dominating the back bar and pastel-coloured geometric shapes slapped on panels protruding from the wall; the punters’ retro garb mirrored the setting. With the sun reluctant to set despite it being close to midnight I retire to my hotel reflecting on the day.
