Local indie scene set for four-day Sled ride

“That changed and there’s lots of venues now and I think there’s still a lot of interesting bands. But there seemed to be a few more steps needed. “Although the eclectic lineup will surely please most music fans Pashak admits the festival has excluded entire genres. “There’s a lot of interesting metal bands in town and there’s none of them playing the festival” he says. “There’s some bands who play more radio-friendly rock music who aren’t on the bill there’s not a lot of punk bands represented not a heck of a lot of rockabilly bands. And Calgary’s got a great rockabilly scene!”This year’s theme was just indie-rock stuff.

The band placed in the top 10 in a national competetion called Dream Spot. Helena band changes name sound lineup and look nearly earns ‘Dream Spot’ on Vans Warped TourStopped in Utah on the early leg of a Northwest music tour Dan Murphy said his band Goodnight Sunrise had been sleeping in Wal-Mart parking lots making the best of life on the open road. With all that time to think the group recently decided to reinvent itself changing its name from Driven Under to Goodnight Sunrise and adding a pop sound to its punk-metal music. The stunt paid off in early June when the band formed in Helena by a group of high school buddies came close to winning a national “Dream Spot” contest that included 10 dates on the 2007 Vans Warped Tour. While Goodnight Sunrise didn’t win the big prize it did crack the top 10 beating out hundreds of other bands to make the chase. “It was pretty big for us it was pretty big exposure” said Murphy the group’s singer and guitarist. “It would have been nice to win.

Central to the band?s style are the fierce riffs from the twin guitar attack which create the wall of sound that the group is known for.
