Rock Solid: Dubai’s Underground Bands
XPRESS – May 23, 2007
” Alternative band Gotwood likes to weave different genres into their music. “We’ve been talking about starting a new project so that we could live out our non-metal roots. We started the band not only to be able to add variety to the predominantly metal music scene but also to have fun” said Dayaan Wickramarachchi voc-alist for the band. Hardcore metal band Decoy Death Trap laments the reality of the high cost of living and education in the UAE. “ne of our members Paulo had to leave for the Philippines [to study]. This has really affected the band as every member is important” said Sary Bibi. According to Dayaan 20 a student at the American University of Sharjah the local music scene has never been able to sustain any steady growth as band members and fans are constantly coming and going.

: Here we were getting all riled up and excited for Metal Mondays at the Lakewood Bar and Grill. Metal Mondays see is a cheese metal tribute night (like you couldn’t figure that out) starring the band Metal Shop a group of bewigged pranksters who paint on the spandex and the makeup and cover everyone from Bon Jovi to Poison to Night Ranger. ‘Cept Metal Mondays it turns out is a show produced by Perfect World Entertainment a company that puts on such shows all across the country often catering to corporate and celebrity clients (according to their Web site Jessica Simpson’s a fan). “Credited with single-handedly igniting the disco revival of the 1990s” the site says “PWE has applied the same innovative approach to its other shows like ‘The Spazmatics’ a nerdy new wave dance party and the comedic pop-rock spoof known as ‘Metal Shop… ‘Cept Metal Mondays it turns out is a show produced by Perfect World Entertainment a company that puts on such shows all across the country often catering to corporate and celebrity clients (according to their Web site Jessica Simpson’s a fan). “Credited with single-handedly igniting the disco revival of the 1990s” the site says “PWE has applied the same innovative approach to its other shows like ‘The Spazmatics’ a nerdy new wave dance party and the comedic pop-rock spoof known as ‘Metal Shop. ‘” Can you imagine dragging your ass to some company get-together and having to endure three hours of the Spazmatics? That’s so The ffice! Anyway turns out there are different Metal Shop bands across the country. Kinda takes the fun out of it huh? Vote damn you!: Thursday May 31 marks your last chance to vote on the nominations ballot for the Dallas bserver Music Awards. The new record Sound Theories is an orchestral record with a rock band that was part of the ensemble of the Metropole orchestra that performed the music. Read about the new record here. Although it’s impossible to perform much of this music live I wanted to figure out a way of introducing some compositions from this record into a set list that consist of some older favorites and some tracks from the catalog that have not been performed live yet. I opted to replace the rhythm section and add two violin players. At first I was planning on a complete overhaul but after careful consideration I decided to invite Jeremy Colson (drums) back into the band as I felt his abilities would meld with the new material plus he knows the older stuff and is as rock solid a drummer as I have ever played with. I needed a keyboard player that doubles on guitar and during auditions I tried out several but could not find the heaviness of a 7 string that some stuff needed and the delicacy of an acoustic player who could also play wicked keyboards but fortunately both of the new violin players double on keyboards so all I needed was a rhythm guitarist. I decided to invite Dave Weiner back into the band as he is a chameleon of the strings… That’s very rare in this world. That’s a true friend. This is the behind the music that you don’t ever see that insidious reality TV will never capture. It’s impossible for me to quantify the value of having someone like that in my life. But then I hear that some blog says ‘Vai shit-cans Sheehan’. Being probably the most criticized guitar player in the world I have lived through years of abuse in the press and have grown pretty thick skin. You just learn to let it go somehow and forge ahead.

Though their music wasn’t particularly innovative they brought the sound of late-’70s punk to a new younger generation with Dookie their 1994 major-label debut. Green Day wasn’t always able to sustain their success — Dookie sold over eight million while its follow-up Insomniac only sold a quarter of its predecessor — yet their influence was far-reaching because they opened the doors for a flood of American neo-punk punk metal and third wave ska revivalists. Green Day was part of the northern California underground punk scene. Childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass; born Mike Pritchard) formed their first band Sweet Children in Rodeo CA when they were 14 years old. By 1989 the group had added drummer Al Sobrante and changed its name to Green Day. That year the band independently released its first EP 1000 Hours which was well received in the California hardcore punk scene.
