Music: A new sting from Scorpions

Vocalist Klaus Meine speaks to AREF MAR about the new album IF a nuclear apocalypse were to happen today chances are German hard rock band Scorpions would still be rocking out hard-hitting tunes and power ballads well after the fallout has dissipated. Not that the quintet of seasoned rockers are roaches but after 35 years and 20 releases they still possess enough stinging mojo to rock you like a hurricane. And that was exactly what the band was known for in the 80s with the massively popular 1984 album Love at First Sting which also spawned the mega hit of an international rock anthem Still Loving You. Then the 90s came and the Scorpions gave the world the infuriatingly hard to miss and timely message of the peace anthem Wind f Change from the US double-platinum certified album Crazy World… The turn of the century had the band experimenting and moving on other creative routes. In 2000 the band pulled a Metallica with its Moment of Glory album which had the band playing its tunes side by side with the Berlin Philharmonic rchestra. The idea however was originally pitched way before the Californian metal behemoth’s 1999 rock-symphony string exercise S&M. In 2001 Scorpions continued to mellow out with Acoustica. Here the band once again traded the studio this time for a Portuguese monastery to record unplugged and reworked versions of their tunes in front of an audience. In 2004 the band returned to a more heavier and raw style of music with Unbreakable which did well on the European music charts. “It’s the right chemistry and an undying passion for music that’s kept us together and going this far” says vocalist Klaus Meine in a telephone conversation.

Are you metal? I don’t mean are you made of a durable alloy of some sort I mean do you RAWK* in every conceivable way that one can RAWK? I think I used to be slightly metal but my frail body couldn’t take it so I had to give it up for folk music. Anyway Dethklok is a death metal band of mythical proportions a group of five musicians who so embody everything that is metal they’re unable to really function in any other capacity. They’re the idiot savants of metal which is just fine because their worldwide fan base has made them worth billions of dollars. In the premiere episode over 300000 fans gather at the Arctic Circle to hear one song from the band a jingle they’ve written for a coffee commercial.

Thus they counterbalance one another until friction or other losses drain the oscillation of energy and the oscillation ceases. All this physics was repeatedly taught to me. All music is based on the mathematics behind an ‘elastic’ medium and its ability to store and release energy. Every elastic system is capable of oscillation and often the mathematics states that there are different modes of oscillation. For strings and pipes these modes occur at whole number multiples of the mode with the lowest frequency (pitch). And so we have harmonic series. For gongs plates of metal xylophones vibraphones and all instruments of this type their modes of oscillation do not occur at whole number multiples of the lowest frequency and are called ‘inharmonic’… For strings and pipes these modes occur at whole number multiples of the mode with the lowest frequency (pitch). And so we have harmonic series. For gongs plates of metal xylophones vibraphones and all instruments of this type their modes of oscillation do not occur at whole number multiples of the lowest frequency and are called ‘inharmonic’. f course the physics of a harp or piano or violin string are not perfect – even they are ‘inharmonic’ as they drift slightly from the perfect elastic string. So the real world is imperfect that the mathematics indicates that sounds in this corporeal world are imperfect. For western music the harmonic series is king it governs the generation of temperament in terms of the favoured intervals that a pitch-system must have – hence historical concentration on temperaments with 12 19 31 and 53 notes.

The stage recalled to memory the stage setting of the Victoria Secret fashion show ?Bringing sexy back?. I eagerly anticipated the appearance of the 77 delegates since as we all know a great deal of planning goes into a production of this magnitude. As the loud rhythm of music filled the air the delegates glided into the metal cubicles and the metal frame seemed to come alive as they struck poses to the rhythm of the beat while other delegates danced on centre stage. This is a very different choreography to what we have come to associate with the Miss Universe Pageant but for all it’s worth a bit of change is good. The delegates rehearsed for hours to perfect their performance and to get a feel of the new environment. This is what showbiz is all about. The selected audience of directors parents and friends were very supportive during rehearsal.
